Sports Massage Therapy
This thorough in-depth course has been designed for Massage practitioners and therapists currently working in Sport and Active Leisure, including Osteopaths, Physiotherapists and Sports Therapists.
The purpose of this specialist course is to enrich practitioners understanding of advanced anatomical, physiological and pathological principles relevant to the application of Sports Massage.
It will provide you with advanced palpation skills and those needed to analyse posture and range of movement. You will learn a range of advanced massage techniques to prevent and manage injury in Sport and Active Leisure - and learn to critically evaluate massage strategies and methods to advise on future treatments.
The comprehensive syllabus includes: Manual Lymphatic Drainage, Neuro-Muscular Technique (NMT), Muscle Energy Technique (MET), Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF), Soft Tissue Release (STR), Connective Tissue Massage (CTM) and more. And you will learn how to apply these techniques to various injuries and conditions associated in particular with sports practices. The syllabus also includes treatment of injury; pre- and post-event routines; corrective and preventative techniques and conditioning massages.
The Wilbury school's Sports Massage Therapy course is unique in that we are able to offer students the 50 hours of event work - which they must complete by the end of the course - on our own premises, by inviting people with injuries to come in and enjoy very low-cost treatments. This will involve attendance at two Friday evenings every month from September 2012 to April 2013.
Tutor Anna Hopcroft teaches the Wilbury course with a thorough knowledge of sports injuries from her wealth of experience as both a coach and an athlete.
Anna previously taught sport and P.E. at Hurstpierpoint College. She also tutors new coaches for UK Athletics and has over 12 years' experience as an athletics coach, currently working with Lewes AC. Anna is a weight-lifting and strength & conditioning coach and works with Surrey University and semi-professional rugby team Haywards Heath RFC on a weekly basis as their Strength and Conditioning Coach and therapist. Anna trained as a sports massage therapist through Premier and ITEC and is a member of the Sports Massage Association (SMA).
Applicants should be qualified in Massage, Anatomy & Physiology and Practice Management to Level 3. However, exemptions may be made for therapists with experience of the workplace.
If you wish to pursue a career in Sports Massage, but are not qualified in Massage, the Wilbury school offers an ITEC Level 3 Massage Techniques course which includes A&P and Practice Management. Please ask for details.
